Welcome to the Eddy Lab

we’re reshaping HOw we teach and learn science

Here in the Eddy Lab, we study student experiences in STEM to support instructors making evidence-based decisions in their classrooms.

Our Mission

Amplifying student voices

Our lab engages in rigorous research to generate data and resources that support science instructors in creating content and course climates that promote student belonging, student motivation, and a sense that each student’s unique background and experiences are a strength within science.

building better classrooms for students & teachers

Many variables can make or break a student’s success in the classroom. Our projects focus on the experience of students, the impact of social and cultural features of active learning on student motivation and learning, and how instructors find pathways to change their teaching.

Understanding the Landscape
We listen to students perspectives with the aim to understand how multiple aspects of STEM courses interact with student identities to collectively impact the student experiences.

Highlighting Success
We identify supportive strategies that some instructors are already employing and use them and student suggestions to build paths forward for the field.

Bringing Awareness
We share our findings with science instructors so that they are better-informed about the challenges that their students face.

“I think there can be a place for me here”

Why This Work Matters

We’re creating change

Strong science requires diverse voices. We work to transform STEM classrooms into environments that foster motivation and critical thinking for all students. This transformation will cultivate a community of scientists read to tackle new global challenges with a respect for all communities involved.
